RIICE - 25 October 2017, International Workshop on Remote Sensing-based Information & Insurance for Crops was organized in Hanoi, Vietnam by the National Institute of Agricultural Planning and Projection, in co-organizing with Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Embassy of Switzerland.

The objectives of the workshop are exchanges of experiences, challenges and opportunities of applying remote sensing - a cutting-edge technology, into crop insurance program. Attending to the workshop are delegations and guests from MARD’s agencies, MONRE, MOF, GSO, CTU, DARDs, insurance companies ABIC, BIC, PVI, Bao viet, Bao minh, UIC, Tokyo Marine, Association of Vietnamese Insurers, Vina Re, etc. International organizations such as SDC, GIZ, WB, FAO, CCAFS, USAID, ICRAF, ADB, SwissRe, Embassies of the US, Netherlands, Belgium, etc., also join the meeting.

Opening the workshop, Mr. Le Quoc Doanh, Vice Minister of MARD addresses the importance of the National Agricultural Insurance Program, which will soon be launched its second phase in early 2018. The remote sensing technology can provide powerful and suitable tools to crop monitoring and disaster management works, added Mister Vice Minister.

Discussions during the workshop has confirmed Remote sensing technology not only helps MARD and other stakeholders quickly get accurate data on rice cultivation, especially important for food security in the context of climate change, but also supports insurance companies to solve barriers of high transaction costs small farmers insurance programs.

MARD will continue to review the technology and results of the RIICE project to be widely used for the sustainable development of agriculture, including technical, financial, human and legal aspects of the information.

On the same day, news and public telecommunication organizations deliver workshop information on public news and television programs.
