RIICE-30 May 2016 - The second phase of RIICE in Vietnam has gone so far a half way. The monitoring works have been intensively conducted in 10 provinces of project's AoI. In the Mekong River delta (MRD), the Winter-Spring rice area and yield estimation for An Giang and Dong Thap were released at district and commune level.

Due to severe drought in early March 2016, plus salinity intrusion, the Spring-Summer's SoS in MRD was started later than last year 2015. Early process from Sentinel-1A SAR data in (2) detected a few areas in An Giang and Dong Thap provinces with SoS falling in late January 2016, while the rest of MRD was at maturity and harvesting status. This season's analyses for MRD is on going and outputs will soon be released.

From February 2016 on ward, the Spring-Summer season has started in the Red River delta (RRD). The RIICE Vietnam working group has conducted field surveys in 8 provinces, including Ha Noi, Ha Nam, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh, Thai Binh, and Nam Dinh.

Field's characteristics such as plant height, innundated water level, crop density, leaf area index (LAI), phenological status... have been measured and organized in an online WebGIS. This information will be lately used for validation of rice extent and yield estimation.
