Mid-season observation of Winter-Spring rice crop in the Mekong River delta from satellite imagery by RIICE project has come out with preliminary results.

The observation pointed out an extention in tranplanting period due to the lack of water in the whole Mekong River area. A water surface index map generated by analyses from SAR data depicts how irrigating work operates through out the dry season.

About 7% reduction of rice cultivation area estimated could explain the great effect of severe drought and salinity intrusion from early March 2016. This reduction could consequently cause a reduction in total product of the region.
